News & Events 5/06/2023

Welcome to our mid-term two e-news family update.

At the beginning of this term, we implemented the state government’s new mobile phone policy, which means that all phones need to be ‘off and away’ during school hours. This policy represents a significant change for our young people, and we have been very pleased with the way they have adapted and worked with us to ensure the implementation has happened smoothly. We have noticed an increase in the amount of conversation and interaction during break times and greater focus in class. Thank you for your support of the policy and we will be seeking feedback from you later in the term.

In a recent update we provided information and resources relating to vaping, which has become a significant health issue across our community and in schools. We recently welcomed the Health Minister, Chris Picton, the Education Minister, Blair Boyer, and our Chief Public Health Officer, Professor Nicola Spurrier, to our school to launch a series of education resources focusing on the dangers of vaping. We will continue to provide information and education for our young people and an upcoming episode of our Bright Psych podcast will focus on the issue. I encourage you to check out the podcast, which is designed specifically to support parents and caregivers on issues relating to adolescent wellbeing, mental health and learning. The podcast is available on Spotify and Apple platforms.

Recent highlights in our calendar have included our Year 12 Drama performance, ‘Heresay’, which was a powerful and highly engaging production, Brighton Careers Week and Music Showcase. Our extensive variety of clubs and activities continues to operate at lunchtimes, thanks to the support of our staff, school sport is operating in both inter-school and knock-out formats and Breakfast Club continues to be popular on Tuesday mornings in the Concert Hall foyer.

Over the last few years, we have invested strongly in developing and promoting student leadership within the school and there have recently been a range of lunchtime activities organised by student leaders. Last week we had a focus on events relating to reconciliation as part of National Reconciliation Week, with the theme Be a Voice for Generations. In Week 7, on Tuesday 13 June, we have a Professional Learning Day for staff which will enable us to further our work on moderation within the Australian Curriculum.

In this update you will find a range of information about upcoming events and activities, sub-school news, school life and support available for our young people.

We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with you during 2023.

Kind regards
Tony
