Year 7 Curriculum
All learning in the Middle Years at Brighton Secondary School is based on the Australian Curriculum. We value the importance of disciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding, the general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.
We also value the opportunity to integrate disciplines where students can explore ideas and concepts over an extended period across several core subjects.
Our expert Middle Years teaching teams work to design curriculum that engages students to explore and solve relevant, meaningful, and complex questions. Students will demonstrate their knowledge and skills by developing products, presentations, or performances for real audiences and purpose. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, creativity and communication and collaboration skills in the context of doing authentic, meaningful work.
In Year 7 our students follow a core curriculum, maintaining a balance across the compulsory Australian Curriculum with opportunities to choose options within the performing and visual arts (Drama, Music and Art), Languages (Japanese or French) and Technologies. We aim to respond to students’ diverse interests and talents, so that they can identify passions, build on strengths, and discover new opportunities throughout the middle school, guided by passionate expert staff.
Year 7 students will automatically be allocated English, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Science and Health and Physical Education subjects. However, students will need to select a language, and Art and Technology options.

Core Music (required for SIM)
In Core Music, you will have the opportunity to play in a class band, string ensemble or percussion ensemble. If you don’t already play an instrument, that’s ok. We welcome beginners to Core Music. If you already play an instrument, that’s great, too. You will have access to free instrumental music lessons every week to support your learning. Instruments can be hired from the school so there is no need to own an instrument. Choosing Core Music will also allow you to participate in the many co-curricular ensembles and choirs available before school, at lunchtime and after school. Core Music students are also eligible for the incredible local and international music tours.
Music Experience
Music Experience is a 6-month experiential music course. You will learn some basic skills on the guitar, keyboard and percussion instruments while covering some entry level music theory and creative tasks. If you wish to study music for more than 6 months, you should choose Core Music, which gives you the option of a musical pathway through to year 12. For students who finish Music Experience and wish to continue learning music beyond 6 months, this will give you a chance to explore your options!

Did you know there are an estimated 100 million people worldwide who are homeless and 1.6 billion who live without adequate housing? Your mission in Tiny Homes is to design a shelter to meet the needs of others who find themselves without suitable housing. You will be using technology to design and test your ideas and then use a variety of materials to prototype and bring your ideas to life.
Food or Fortune
One in five Australians have experienced food insecurity at some point in the last 12 months. This means that there has been at least one time in the last year when they didn’t have enough food for themselves or their family. Using food, materials and digital technologies you will create a solution to help support people in need.
DesignAbility
Many issues in the world are being solved using technology. The use of software combined with connected electronic devices to design and implement solutions provides significant opportunity in almost all industries.
