Senior School Update

News & Events 1/06/2023

Dear Families,

Please find following an update on key events and activities in the Senior School.

Mobile Phone and Personal Device Policy

Term 2 has seen the introduction of the state government's Mobile Phone and Personal Device Policy. Pleasingly, our young people in the Senior School have responded very well to this adjustment. What we have noticed is a different feel around the school and in the Senior Study Centre. Having our young people talking to each other and connecting has been wonderful to observe. We will continue to support our young people with this change.

Semester 2 Timetables

Our Year 10 and 11 students have received their semester 2 timetables and, as per the communication, are working with their Home Group Teacher and Year Level Leader to finalise these to begin semester 2 on Monday 26 June.

Year 11 and Year 12 Semester 1 Exams

The planning for Senior School exams is well underway. The first exams to take place will be our year 11 semester 1 exams which will be held later this term. Our year 12 mid-year exams will follow early in term 3.  Specific information regarding these exams will be provided directly to these students and their families.

We ask that family travel is not planned during this time as the SACE have indicated that special provisions cannot be provided for such events.

Senior School Study Centre
A reminder that the Senior Study Centre is open to our year 11 and 12 students for study purposes both before and after school at the following times:

Before school from 8.30am:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
  • Please note, the Study Centre is not available to students Wednesday morning

After school until 4.30pm:

  • Monday – Thursday

Year Level Updates

During Careers Week this term, all of our year 10 students had the opportunity to attend our on-site Careers Expo and engage with employers and training providers.

In addition, year 10 students are able to undertake work experience to further explore career opportunities, by firstly completing their WorkPro Certificate and then speaking with local businesses. All of the work required for this is supported through our year 10 Home Group program.

Our year 11 students will be undertaking their semester 1 exams this term, beginning on Friday 16 June and concluding on Friday 23 June.  Further information on exam preparation, expectations and the exam timetable are detailed in the year 11 semester 1 exam article.

Sammy D Foundation Workshops and Presentations

During Weeks 9 and 10 of this term, all year 11s will participate in a presentation and workshop delivered by the Sammy D Foundation. The Sammy D Foundation strives to educate young people on the impacts of bullying, and drug and alcohol-fuelled violence. They provide relevant age-appropriate knowledge and tools with the goal to empower young people to make positive life decisions.

On Wednesday 28 June, students will participate in the presentation and hear the story of Sam Davis. They will also be given examples of the characteristics of violence and the consequences that it has on victims, bystanders, families, friends and the broader community.  Following the presentation, students will participate in small group workshops on Monday 3 July or Friday 7 July with a focus on harm, impact and consequences, warning signs and de-escalation strategies.

Our year 12 students are well into their studies. During week 4, our school community had the privilege of being invited to attend the Stage 2 Drama performance, Heresay. The performance was highly entertaining and a credit to our students and their teacher, Catherine Carter.

Year 12 mid-year exams will be held in week 2 of term 3. The timing of this event ensures that they have completed much of the course content and provides a more authentic exam experience. Prior to the exam week, an assembly will be held on Wednesday 26 July during Home Group. The expectation is that all year 12 students attend this assembly so that they are well informed of how week 2 will run, both for students with exams and for those without exams.

The preparations for the 2023 Valedictory are well underway, with the event scheduled to be held on Wednesday 29 November at the Adelaide Town Hall. More information regarding arrangements for the evening and ticketing will be provided soon.

We look forward to continuing to support our young people in the Senior School to engage in life at Brighton Secondary School and to maximise their learning opportunities.
