Commemoration at school

On Friday 11 November, our school community gathered to commemorate Remembrance Day. Some of our Middle School Leaders, Asha, Michelle, Sarah and Amrita, hosted the assembly on a sunny day on the Front Oval.

Michelle read a poem by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCraw, who was a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade. In his poem, McCraw recalls the red poppies on the graves of soldiers who died on the Western front.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

Red poppies are now symbols of commemoration in all Commonwealth and allied nations. As a symbol of respect for those who died, each home group was invited to bring a paper poppy and place it in the ground in front of our War Memorial.

Thank you to Kyla for her Acknowledgment of Country, Jack who played The Last Post and Rouse, to our cadets Hugh, Mahika, Sashwat and Vinayika, assisted by Emma and Brayden, who coordinated the flag lowering and raising, and the Treble Choir who sang the National Anthem and the hymn O Valiant Hearts, accompanied by Ms Lewis and Olivia.

Remembrance Day at West Terrace Cemetery

In honour of a longstanding relationship between Brighton Secondary School and the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority, the music department also supported the Remembrance Day service at West Terrace Cemetery. Jazz Choir 1, Jazz Choir 2 and the Brass Ensemble, directed by Emma Borgas and Andrew Barrett, performed O Valiant Hearts and Advance Australia Fair in a very moving service amongst the graves of fallen service personnel.
