Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week 2023

News & Events 5/06/2023

Our House Captains and other student leaders have been working alongside their staff House Leaders and the Aboriginal Education Team to plan and run events and activities to acknowledge some important dates.

We celebrated Reconciliation Week in Week 5 with Mirnu House Captains running a sausage sizzle fundraiser and encouraging everyone to wear a splash of yellow to support Children’s Ground https://childrensground.org.au/. Tarnta House Captains teamed up with Villi’s to organise a reconciliation donut fundraiser, selling 150 donuts and raising money for the Tjindu Foundation https://tjindufoundation.org.au/. This year’s theme for Reconciliation Week is “Be a Voice for Generations”, and students were encouraged to write a pledge about how they could be a voice for their generation, and those who follow, in our school’s commitment to reconciliation.

Week 10 is NAIDOC Week, which is a time to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the theme this year is “For Our Elders”. Yarlu House Captains will be running a home group Kahoot quiz to help learn about key achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Wilya House Captains will be running a lunchtime activity that includes students contributing to a respect tree and setting up a gallery walk to celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders. There will be a NAIDOC Week poster colouring competition and a lunchtime music performance by an Aboriginal artist organised by Karrkala House Captains and the Tantutiti House Captains and some Middle School Leaders are organising “The Great Book Swap” to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation https://www.indigenousliteracyfoundation.org.au/.
