Keeping everyone safe at school

News & Events 6/03/2024

At Brighton Secondary School, safety is important to us!  That’s why we need your help to make sure everyone stays safe and happy by discussing the below school safety requirements with your young person:

Smoke-free and vape-free areas – NEW regulations:

From Friday 1 March 2024, new regulations will extend the smoke-free and vape-free areas to within 10 metres of site boundaries.

This includes:

  • School drop-off and pick-up zones that are within 10 metres of the school fence, gate or boundary
  • School ovals and sporting fields and within 10 metres of the boundary of the oval or sporting field
  • Footpaths, roads, public nature strips and public recreation areas that are within 10 metres of a school boundaries

🚲 Bike Safety:

Remember to walk bikes on school grounds to avoid accidents. Since our school is big and lots of students are moving around, it’s safer to get off your bike when entering onto school property.

💨 Aerosol Spray Safety:

Did you know that aerosol sprays like deodorants can cause serious problems for some people? Many people at our school have allergies or sensitivities to these sprays, which can serve as triggers for serious asthma attacks or induce severe migraines. So, let’s leave the aerosols at home! Roll-on or stick deodorants are fine to bring to school.

🚦 Brighton Road Crossing Lights:

Students need to be careful when crossing Brighton Road, especially at the end of the day. Sometimes, kids rush across the road even after the green light goes off, and that can be dangerous. We’re adding extra staff to watch this spot, and we’re working with the Holdfast Council and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to see if we can make crossing safer for everyone.

Let’s work together to keep our school safe for everyone!
