Assessment and Reporting

At Brighton Secondary School, we recognise that learning can look different for each individual, and that evidence of learning can be seen in informal learning activities, formal assessment tasks and naturally arising throughout a student’s learning experience. We use a range of assessment and reporting routines to assist students, teachers, and parents to understand the student as a learner, to identify their strengths, areas of development in knowledge, skills and understanding, and develop action plans for improvement.

Assessment types

Teachers use multiple forms of assessment and feedback as part of an ongoing process to progress students’ learning and to inform their teaching practice.

Informal or ongoing assessment occurs throughout the year to support students to track their progress and understanding of new ideas and concepts. This is often referred to as formative assessment and can also be used by the teacher to identify areas where a student requires additional support in their learning.

Formal assessment, often referred to as summative assessment, is measured against the Australian Curriculum or SACE standards. Typically, students will receive an A-E grade for summative assessment pieces, which contribute to their final end of semester report or final SACE result.

Reporting

All students in years 7-12 will receive two formal written reports about their progress and achievement in relation to the Australian Curriculum and SACE Curriculum each year, which are published on Daymap.

In addition, all students receive a non-graded progress report every 5 weeks via Daymap.

Our formal reporting schedule is:

Term 1 End of Term 1 Report (Year 12)

Onsite Exhibition of Learning (Year 7) – Parents/caregivers who attend the onsite exhibition will listen to their student present about their learning, have an informal conversation with their core subject teachers about their progress, and get an insight into what the students day to day life looks like.

Term 2 Parent/Student/Teacher Conversations – These conversations give parents and/or caregivers and their student the opportunity to seek feedback on their academic progress and strategies to support their success for the remainder of the semester.

End of Semester 1 report (Year 7-11)

Term 3 Parent/Student/Teacher Conversations

End of Term 3 Report (Year 12)

Onsite Exhibition of Learning (Year 7)

Term 4 End of Semester 2 Report (Year 7-11)
