  • We aim to teach students about violence prevention, conflict resolution, anger management and problem solving.
  • We develop policies to promote student safety.
  • We value and celebrate diversity.

School Values

VALUE

HOW DO WE SHOW IT?

COOPERATION

When we share and show good group skills by listening to others and accepting their point of view, even if it is different from our own, we are showing cooperation. Cooperation means we try to do our bit for the school, the world and each other.

  • Listen and share ideas
  • Participate in activities set up for students
  • Ask others for their opinions
  • Get along with each other
  • Wear the school uniform correctly
  • Pick up litter when asked to by a staff member

EXCELLENCE
Believing that, “Near enough is not good enough”, and if we all do well we excel.  If it is our personal best, it is excellent.

  • Do everything to the best of our ability
  • Work to improve
  • Be proud of our work
  • Work when we are supposed to
  • Celebrate our achievements
  • Encourage other people

FAIRNESS
When we treat others as we would like to be treated and we provide everyone with opportunities to succeed, we are showing fairness.

  • Share and care
  • Do not put ourselves above others (no put downs)
  • Choose words that are not offensive
  • Include and support others
  • Be positive and let people have a different opinion from ours

INTEGRITY
When we do what we know is the right thing to do and we are true to ourselves without taking advantage of others, we are showing integrity.
Integrity means keeping our word and doing as we say we will and having the courage to stand up for what we know is right.

  • When we tell someone we will do something then we do it
  • Be loyal
  • Be truthful and honest
  • Be reliable

RESPECT
Respect means having a positive regard for yourself, other people and their property.  Respect means valuing difference in culture and ability.

  • Listen when others are talking and to what they are saying
  • Follow school rules
  • Be polite
  • Use positive body language
  • Look after school property

RESPONSIBILITY
Choosing our behaviour, caring for our belongings and doing what we are expected to do without having to be asked is being responsible.

  • Accept the consequences for our actions
  • Do homework and pass work up on time
  • Look after our belongings
  • Take on leadership opportunities
  • Show initiative
  • Be organised
  • Be helpful
  • Be a role model
  • Keep the school clean and graffiti free

Behaviour
The Department of Education and Children’s Services processes for Suspension, Exclusion and Expulsion provide a framework for managing student behaviour in all DECS schools. The principles of natural justice are followed and parents will be contacted in cases of serious behaviour, attendance or work performance issues.

Consequences of irresponsible behaviour may include:

  • counselling by staff and negotiation of a behaviour change contract to help students meet learning and behaviour expectations.
  • yard clean up
  • time in the Withdrawal Room
  • community service
  • lunchtime and/or after school Detention
  • internal suspension
  • removal of study lesson privileges
  • limited access to facilities and resources (e.g. computing use)
  • exclusion from excursions, camps and school events
  • Suspension, Exclusion,  Expulsion or alternative placement

Police contact will also be required in the case of an illegal act and / or any drug related incident.

Further more specific information regarding consequences can be accessed on the school’s intranet or by request.

Absence
Regular and punctual attendance at school is necessary for students to learn effectively and to achieve success in their learning. The school has developed procedures to monitor attendance and promote students’ skills of self organisation. These procedures, which are documented in the school planner, are based on the expectation that there will be communication between the home and the school when students are absent.
The student absence email contact is located in the Absences Hotline section of the school website.

Computer and Internet Access
Learning Technologies are an integral part of the school curriculum and it is the responsibility of each student to use the resource responsibly. All students are required to sign the Learning Technologies Code of Conduct form, which outlines the school expectations when using this technology. Copies of the form are available from Student Reception or IT Support.

On enrolment at Brighton Secondary School all students are issued with a personal user name and password for access to the curriculum network and the internet.

Students are advised to ensure their work is backed-up on the school’s network (using their “H” drive) and not to rely on USBs and/or other portable media as a sole means of data storage. Data stored on the network is backed-up and taken offsite on a nightly basis.  An archive of the previous week’s back-up tapes is retained. The school has a duty of care to ensure that students are not accessing or using inappropriate material. All student activities are monitored and logged on the school system. It is very important that students understand that they do not give their password to anyone and that they change it regularly.

All students receive an allocated amount for printing. Once this allocation is used, the student is required to purchase more credit through Student Reception.

Home Work
Home work is often ongoing assignment work that gives students valuable practice in working independently, consolidating and applying their learning. It is an integral part of the curriculum that is essential to encourage and support progress in each subject.

Set homework and due dates should be recorded in the planner on a regular basis. Parents are asked to support students in planning and completing homework and by checking and signing the planner each week.

Mobile Phones
Students must take responsibility for the safe keeping of personal mobile phones and ICT storage devices. The school cannot accept responsibility for any loss or theft of such items.

  • Mobile phones are to be turned off and be out of sight during lessons, assemblies and meetings.
N.B. students who have study lines are to honour this part of the policy.
  • Mobile phones may only be used to receive, return, or make calls during recess and lunch breaks, or before and after school.
  • Music storage and playing devices are not to be used during lesson times. Students must comply with staff requests to remove such equipment.

Student Planner
This student planner (diary) is designed to be used by students to:

  • assist students to develop their planning and organisational skills
  • encourage positive study practices
  • provide a communication link between parents, staff and students
  • keep a record of students’ achievements and attendance.
