Futures Connect
The Futures Connect Strategy is preparing students for future pathways. The strategy involves Building Engaging Curriculum, Community Partnerships, Individual Learning Plan, Career Development, Monitor and Tracking Students.
Brighton Secondary undertakes a number of activities across the year within the futures connect strategy. This includes activities in year 9 – 12 pastoral care. The year 10s complete a Stage 1 Unit in Work Education. In week 10 of term 2 the year 10s do a Futures Connect Week which includes the following:
- Investigating Career Options – students will undertake a visit to the Career Reference Centre in the city, investigate career websites and complete their Career Action Plan, which they will need to take with them to their course counselling session next term.
- Understanding SACE – Students will undertake a session in understanding SACE and its requirements to ensure they select an appropriate course next year.
- Transition Portfolio – All Year 10 students across the state receive a Transition Portfolio.
This helps students prepare for job applications and interviews and helps to identify skill areas. This is
something the students need to continually update throughout their senior schooling.
Our students have received the Transition Portfolio and have already started work on this in Pastoral Care sessions. Some of the sessions in Week 10 will focus on the Transition Portfolio - including the job application process, resume writing and mock interviews. - Preparation for Work Experience – These sessions are essential before the students go on their work experience placement. The sessions include Occupational Health and Safety, Equal Opportunity and Harassment, and general work experience requirements.
- General Interest – These sessions include financial management skills, workplace communication, teenage health issues, learning to drive and police driver education.
Other significant activities involved in the futures connect strategy include:
Work Experience – Students undertake a week of work experience in year 10 and in year 11. Year 10 work experience forms part of the student’s assessment for their stage 1 Work Education unit.
Australian Business Week - The ABW program is designed to encourage independent and cooperative learning skills and to develop an enterprise mindset prior to entering the workforce or proceeding to further study. The students develop a number of employability skills during the week including leadership, communication skills and problem solving skills, initiative and use of technology, just to name a few. The programme also exposes participants to the issues of coping with stress and effective time management, both major issues that impact on students when undertaking their SACE.
During the five days of the ABW programme students will be divided into teams of 10 to work together on the following tasks:
- Managing a business through a computer simulation
- Learning from guest speakers from business and the community
- Develop a new product for their business
- Create a video and trade display to advertise their product
- Give a verbal and written report of the week’s activities
- Interact with business people and teachers as facilitators
Young Achievers Australia
Up to 25 students from year 10 – 12 form a real company. Over a 24 week period they go through the process of setting up the company, including issuing shares, choosing and registering the company name, they then develop a product idea, manufacture and market the product, keep financial records and finally wind up the company at the end of the 24 week period.
Vocational Training (VET course)
VET courses are offered to year 10 – 12 students (refer to curriculum offerings). Some are done outside of the school and are organised through Quality LinCS while we also offer a number of subjects with VET competencies embedded.
School Based Apprenticeships (SBA)
There are currently a number of students in the school undertaking SBAs in Hospitality, Printing, Automotive, Butchery and Retail. An SBA is where students undertake their apprenticeship/traineeship on a part time basis while also attending school. It generally involves students undertaking their industry training for 1 day a week, work placement 1 day a week and school for 3 days.
